What Is Vermicompost and How Do You Use It?

Vermicompost is an organic material produced when earthworms eat and digest organic matter. What they leave behind is a dark, crumbly material with a pleasant, earthy smell. Many farmers and gardeners use vermicompost as part of an organic soil-care routine because it is easy to handle and gentle on plants.

Why soil likes vermicompost

  • It adds organic matter, which helps soil become looser, hold water better and let roots spread more easily.

  • It enriches the soil with nutrients, supporting plant growth and health.

  • It is an organic option for growers who care about the environment and want to reduce their footprint.

That said, vermicompost is a soil improver, not a miracle product. You will get the best results when you combine it with sensible watering, mulching and regular care of your beds.

Simple ways to use vermicompost

  1. Bed preparation: spread vermicompost over the bed and work it into the topsoil before planting vegetables or field crops.

  2. In the planting hole: when planting fruit trees or other trees, mix vermicompost with the soil you dug out and put it back into the hole.

  3. Around established plants: sprinkle a thin layer around the drip line, keeping a little distance from the stem. Lightly work it into the surface and water it in.

  4. Potting mixes: blend it with potting soil for containers or seedling trays in a sensible proportion. There is no need to use vermicompost on its own.

A good rule is to start with a small amount, watch how your plants respond, and then adjust for your crop, your soil and your growing area. Store bags in the shade, out of direct sun and rain, so the product stays in good condition until you use it.
